                            Aluminum Foot Grilles and Mats
Aluminum Foot Grille / Grid Recessed Entrance Mat of Office Building, Indianapolis, IN
Under this section we are continuing our discussion of aluminum foot grilles and roll-up mats, their functionality, some of the factors to consider and whether or not this matting system would be appropriate for your particular usage.  As you are probably well aware, there are many manufacturers of the aluminum foot grilles and roll-up mats.  You may not be aware of the fact that putting these products in use may require a little more care than other types of matting systems.  As a result, it may  be beneficial to utilize a matting distributor like The Mad Matter, Inc.  For instance, prior to recommending a product for you, we would need to ascertain some information so that we could outfit your property with the best product.

Aluminum Roll-Up Entrance Mat recessed at Bank Entrance, Greenville, SCSome of the questions we might ask could be:
Is this mat going to be recessed in a pit or will it set on top of the substrate flooring?

Is this product going to be used indoors or outside?

If the product is recessed, how deep is the pit?

What type of traffic will this matting be subjected to (i.e., foot, wheeled carts, pallet jacks, etc.)?

Is this project "New Construction" or is this matting replacing an old mat?

If this project is "New Construction"  is there a need for a frame to go around the matting?

If a frame is required, who will be installing the frame?  Has he installed one before?

If the mat is replacing an old mat, are you doing so because the mat is damaged or only because the carpet inserts of the matting are worn?

These are but a few questions we cover.  However, the answer to each question provides us with more information so that we may best serve you and your particular needs.  For instance take the last question about worn carpet inserts.  It would be expensive and wasteful to buy a new foot grille or roll-up mat if the existing mat only needed it's carpet inserts replaced.   A new foot grille can cost up to $60.00 per square foot.  Foot grilles are basically quite sturdy and are not easily damaged.  It would be more prudent to replace the carpet inserts in most cases rather than the entire matting system.
For instance, a "new" foot grille measuring 8' x 10' may cost between $2,500 and $4,800.  And this does not take into consideration installation issues which can be daunting.
If the basic mat is in good shape, it would cost approximately $1,200 in materials to refurbish the same mat with our Diamond Strip Carpet Inserts.  You can see an aluminum foot grille mat below that has been refurbished.

Both the roll-up mats and Aluminum Foot Grills can be refurbished.  However, it would be necessary to ascertain specific information about your existing matting before we would recommend refurbishing your matting.  Some of the manufacturers of the roll-up mats started to produce these mats with a combination aluminum and PVC (vinyl).  The PVC is subject to deterioration over time and once it has degraded, the mat essentially falls apart when the old carpet inserts are removed.  When this is the case, total replacement is necessary.
If your need is for a new matting system, it is imperative to utilize a professional to assist with the measurement, purchase and installation of your new mats.  There are many issues to consider that will affect whether or not you receive the matting you deserve and expect.  Some of the signs of using the "wrong" supplier of matting may be:

      1. Placement of seams lie in the walk pattern.
      2. The Foot Grille may "rock" or "teeter" in the recess.
      3. The mat has excessive gaps between the mat and pit wall or worse yet, the mat does not fit in the recess at all.
      4. Acceptable time frames for installation are not met.
      5. Door clearance issues.
      6. Orientation of the mat is wrong - (Carpet inserts should be perpendicular to flow of traffic).

There are many other issues of concern when dealing with these types of mats.  Most general contractors will tell you that mats are usually a thorn in their side.  The reason is simple, there are not that many master distributors of matting out there that have the knowledge and ability to properly install or refurbish these types of mats.  There is not a shortage of manufacturers.  There is, however, a shortage of those who can "furnish AND install" these mats well.
