Points To Ponder When Choosing Your Kitchen Anti Fatigue Matting
Kitchen matting areas where food is prepared or handled are often areas where there are an inordinate amount of animal fats, greases, water and cleaning chemicals. Cleanliness is a top priority along with prevention of slip and falls and worker comfort. The diversity of kitchen mat products available for these areas is immense. When considering which kitchen anti fatigue matting would best suit your particular environment, you should consider the following issues:
Product Considerations
How heavy is the kitchen mat?
Kitchen matting will need to be picked up and moved for cleaning.
Do the kitchen floor mats have holes for drainage?
Often times perforations are important to allow for food particles and liquids to fall below the walking surface of the kitchen mats.
Does the construction of the kitchen floor mats have a design that is easy to clean?
Many of the kitchen anti fatigue matting available today, especially the thicker 1/2" and 7/8" products have holes that have slight "lips" at the base of the holes that can catch dirts and be difficult to clean. The best perforated kitchen floor mats do not have this "lip". Also, kitchen matting with snap on edges, gritty surfaces and designs with lots of nooks and crannies should be avoided. Kitchen anti fatigue matting with these properties possess many cavities that are difficult to clean. If the kitchen floor mats are not properly maintained, they can become a breeding ground for bacteria and germs.
Is the Kitchen Anti Fatigue Matting made of Rubber?
Animal fats, greases and chemicals will seriously degrade most kitchen matting, unless it is made of rubber. Rubber kitchen mats can also be outfitted with an agent that renders the product as a "Grease Resistant Mat" or a "Grease Proof Mat". The harsher the environment (i.e., Fryer areas, Grills, etc.) should be outfitted with the Grease Proof Matting. Other areas that are not subjected to as many fats and oils (i.e., salad prep, dishwashing areas, etc.) can use a grease resistant kitchen mat.
Are the rubber kitchen mats made of Nitrile Rubber?
Nitrile Rubber kitchen matting is the highest grade of rubber offered for harsh anti-fatigue environments. Nitrile Rubber kitchen mats are oil and grease proof. Kitchen matting that is made of vinyl or a vinyl sponge will quickly degrade and should not be used in this environment.
Does this type of kitchen anti fatigue mat pose a Trip Hazard?
Often times, rubber kitchen mats are sold on the premise that "thicker" is better. This is faulty logic for a kitchen environment for the following reasons. Thicker rubber kitchen mats are usually heavier and more difficult to handle/clean. Thicker kitchen mats also pose a trip hazard to people who are walking in the vicinity of the kitchen matting (i.e., servers, busboys, etc.). If the kitchen mat is not seen and someone is carrying a platter, a tripping situation can arise causing injury and a mess. Thicker rubber kitchen matting is often more expensive than thinner kitchen matting. This is an area where a trade off toward safety and ease of maintenance may outweigh worker comfort.
