    Non Slip Mats used in these types of environments should possess at a minimum the following qualities:
        1.    Non slip mats should be easy to maintain.
        2.    Shower Mats, Pool Mats and Interlocking floor mats used in wet areas should be resistant to mold and mildew.
        3.    Non slip mats and Deck Tiles used as interlocking mats in wet areas should be non-absorptive to allow for quick drying.
        4.    Shower Mats and interlocking floor tiles used as non slip mats should be drainable to allow the free flow of water.
        5.    Non slip mats and interlocking tiles used as Shower Mats or Wet Area Matting should offer a good 
                   coefficient of friction to help prevent slip and falls.

    Shower Mats and Non Slip Mats are available in rolls that can be custom cut, as individual mats and many of these specialty flooring products come in interlocking tiles to allow for custom configurations.

Interlocking Floor Tiles are especially good for odd shaped or large areas.  Depending upon how the product is to be utilized, there are numerous non slip mat products available that are ideal as shower mats, locker room flooring, mats for changing areas, pool mats, spa mats or in any area that slip and falls due to moisture may pose a threat.
    Some interlocking tiles are intended for light foot traffic like in a shower or locker room setting.  Other interlocking tiles are designed to withstand heavy foot traffic or abusive environments like around pools and spa areas.  When non slip mats or interlocking tiles are to be used as a shower mat, spa mat or as pool mats, they should be able to withstand the effects of chlorine and bleaches.  Most interlocking tiles are plastic  manufactured from a PVC material that is inherently resistant to mildews and molds.
 When used in areas where bare feet will be present, be mindful of any edges or corners that could be sharp posing the risk of injury.  Many of the interlocking tiles on the market today have a separate interlocking edge that acts as a reducer to minimize trip and fall hazards.    
        
Drainage holes for any non slip mat or interlocking tile used as a shower mat or as spa mats should be large enough to allow air flow and debris (particularly hair) to fall through the base of the matting.
    Non slip mats that are not to be used in a shower area, but rather to safeguard against slip and falls can be less porous.  However, the smaller the perforations of the interlocking tiles will make your interlocking floor mats more difficult to clean.















    When using non slip mats, one should pay particular attention to pivotal areas.  Also, it is beneficial for a non slip mat used as wet area matting to be wide enough to accomodate two people side by side (usually 4' or wider).
    
    Ultra-violet rays from the sun can cause some plastic floor mats and interlocking tiles to degrade over time.  The result is usually a fading or discoloration.

    One must weigh the pro's and cons when using non slip mats outside.  On the positive side, non slip mats will reducel slips and falls, can cover up stained and worn decks and flooring and serve as denoting a safe area to traverse.  On the negative side, outdoor mats will generally need to be replaced more frequently due to UV degradation.  Some interlocking tiles are available that are more resistant to UV.  Just Ask.

    Finally, there are some non slip mat products available that we call hybrids.  They can be used as wet area matting, but they can also be used in areas where there might be a light presence of oils, animal fats and greases or other types of chemicals.  Areas that come to mind may be at a dishwasher station or an area where items are being washed with detergents.  In these instances, it may be prudent to utilize wet area matting that has a grease resistant or grease proof quality about them.  Often these mats are made from a nitrile rubber and are popular for kitchen matting applications.
